BENEFITS OF PEMF, MASSAGE, ACCUPRESSURE, TRIGGER POINT THERAPY AND MYOFASCIAL RELEASE
“The power of touch is considered both spiritual and physical. Our hands send healing energy and love to the animals we work on.” - RMSAAM
Increases Blood Circulation – Massage encourages blood vessels to open increasing circulation. Each cell and fiber in the body must be continually bathed in fresh, oxygen-rich blood. Oxygen- rich blood brings nutrients, oxygen, and proteins necessary for healthy cell growth and function. Additionally, the circulating blood removes cellular waste and transports it to be filtered out of the body.
In healthy tissue, blood flows through the system, but in injured or indolent muscles, less blood is pumped through the system. Massage and PEMF therapy increases blood flow providing essential nutrients to the depleted muscles encouraging reparation of unhealthy tissue.
In sport horses, horses in training, and injured horses, oxygenation of the muscle tissues speeds up cellular metabolism, which can lead to enhanced performance and/or shorter recover time.
Increased Energy - Improved circulation, natural healing, reduced inflammation all results in reduced pain all translates into increased energy.
Increases Lymph Movement – Lymphatic fluid, or lymph, is the clear fluid that contains white blood cells. White blood cells are the workforce of the immune system. Lymph does not have a pump in the way that the blood has the heart. Massage is one of the ways that lymph can be moved through the lymphatic system. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), lymph is associated with chi or Qi, the energy life force of the body.
Muscle Health – Massage stimulates the release of neutrophils (white blood cells that fight inflammation) as well as opioids produced in the body. Neutrophils and opioids produced by the body act as natural pain killers thus decreasing muscle soreness.
Stimulation of Acupoints – By stimulating these points we can rebalance systems in the body. These points are closely related to nerve bundles and can release endorphins and opioids in the body which act as natural pain killers.
Reduction of Inflammation – PEMF therapy re-energizes damaged cells stimulating the reduction of inflammation.
Injury Recovery and Wound Healing - PEMF therapy enhances oxygenation of blood flow through the body thus helping the body to heal itself. On average the healing process is increased by about a third of the time it would normally take without use of PEMF therapy.
Pain Reduction - It is theorized that PEMF may encourage the body to create micro-currents that run through neuro-pathways. This response denies C fibers from accessing neural gateways that trigger the pain response. It is believed that the reduced signal equals less pain. In some cases, relief can begin in minutes.
Relaxation – Soft tissue bodywork encourages muscles to relax thus decreasing stress levels.
Anxiety – Research shows that along with better-oxygenated blood, PEMF and massage assist the glucose metabolism areas of the brain that contribute to anxiety.
Bone Mending - Studies have shown and the FDA approved PEMF therapy for treating non-union fractures. Improved quality of calcium is produced in one-third of the standard time. PEMF sessions could accelerate repair of both bone and soft tissue.
Emotional Health – In addition to improved general emotional well-being, massage affects animals on many emotional levels. It can help with depression, fear, separation anxiety, trauma, grieving, shyness, and aggression. Massage promotes comfort, love bonding, trust, happiness and confidence.

TYPES OF THERAPY
TYPES OF MASSAGE THERAPY
Therapeutic Massage – The focus of Therapeutic massage is to support overall wellness for the horse, offer relaxation, physical and emotional release, and to improve bonding with humans by providing physical contact and loving intention. It helps to boost the circulatory and immune systems, encouraging increased circulation, improved muscle tone, improved digestion, and improved skin tone. It can greatly contribute to relaxing the nervous system. Typically, therapeutic massage is performed using long strokes and kneading techniques to manipulate the superficial muscle layers. Therapeutic massage can be beneficial for senior and convalescing horses by helping organs do their job more easily, increase the circulation of lymphatic fluid, and increase their comfort and quality of life.
Sports Massage – Bifurcated by pre-event and post-event massage, Sports massage focuses on the cause of muscle injury, with the intent of not just relieving muscular pain, but assisting in the prevention of future injuries to those muscles. The job of a sports massage practitioner is to find damaged areas and restore them through a specific protocol.
Pre-event massage warms up the horse by increasing circulation to the muscles. It energizes and prepares muscles for an event or exercise, helping to prevent injury and promote flexibility.
Post-event massage loosens up the muscles and joints, prevents stiffness and soreness, and helps to increase venous blood flow which encourages the removal of waste products and facilitates recovery. After vigorous exercise, dehydration takes place in the horse and with the loss of fluids, it’s harder for him/her to cool down.
Senior Massage – Senior massage is a type of massage that focuses on the needs of senior animals. This can include supporting convalescing organs, increasing the flow of lymphatic fluid, support for tissue in areas of muscular atrophy, emotional support and more.
Myofascial Release – Myofascial Release treats the cause of the problem and not just the symptoms which allows for the permanency of results that has been observed. Fascia is a three dimensional web of connective tissue which surrounds and infuses within every muscle, bone, organ, nerve, blood vessel, tendon and ligament in the body. In addition, it surrounds every single cell in the body as it travels in one continuous web-like sheath from head to tail in the horse’s body. This connective tissue acts as a shock absorber in the body. Physical training programs, certain injuries, stress or trauma can cause the fascial system to become bound down, resulting in postural and gait deviations, loss of flexibility and compression of pain to sensitive structures in the body. Left untreated, fascial restrictions will tighten, pulling throughout the body along the fascial web. Fascial restriction has the ability to pull up to 2,000 pounds per square inch of tension in one area. That is a significant amount of tension to overcome and can be the cause of many problems that limit the performance of an equine athlete. Myofascial Release is a comprehensive, whole body, hands-on approach that restores the necessary slack in the connective tissue web to help eliminate lameness and enhance a horse’s performance.
MagnaWave Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy (PEMF) - MagnaWave PEMF is a non-invasive therapy consisting of pulsed electromagnetic waves being sent throughout the body to stimulate cellular repair. The MagnaWave machines have a unique electrical current that runs through a copper coil that creates a pulsing magnetic field. These are known as PEMFs. Research about PEMF has been ongoing since the 1940s. MagnaWave positively charges blood cells so that they repel one another (like-magnetic charges repel), making it impossible for them to stick together. This maximizes the ability of the blood cells to perform their tasks in the capillaries of all the major organs. The work of the lungs, liver, intestines and kidneys is optimized when proper and full blood flow can take place. MagnaWave benefits cellular energy, resulting in better cellular health and function, which allows the body to more efficiently process the electrical and chemical exchanges associated with those channels and address imbalances or dysfunctions in those areas – leading to improved adaptation and natural healing.
